Sit idly by Sunday law

The expectation of future prophetic events, such as the enforcement of Sunday laws, should never lead to a state of passive waiting or inactivity. There is a significant danger for those who believe that because prophecy has foretold these events, they can simply sit in calm expectation and rely on divine protection without making any personal effort. God requires His people to be vigilant soldiers who actively perform the duties committed to them, rather than remaining asleep or at ease while the enemy gains an advantage (1888 501.3). When the movement toward Sunday legislation becomes a present reality, it is a call for believers to consider their duty and assist in upholding the standard of religious rights. Silence in the face of the trampling of God's commandments is viewed as a dishonor to Him. Instead of remaining quiet, there is a responsibility to call those who value religious liberty to the front and to seek God for the grace and power necessary to face the restriction of liberties (T33 244.1) (LDE 125). This principle of active engagement extends to all areas of Christian life and ministry. Believers are cautioned against overlooking present, golden opportunities for service while dreaming of future success or ease in roles for which they may not be fitted. Whether in the mission field or in daily life, the instruction is to do the work that is nearest with the same steadfastness to duty as a needle to the pole, regardless of hardships or the lack of a smooth path (5T 406.1) (MC 27.1) (CEv 57).

Even in smaller, practical matters, such as the conduct of young ministers when receiving hospitality, there is a counsel against sitting idle. By being thoughtful and rendering assistance to those who serve them, workers can find access to hearts and prepare the way for the reception of truth. This proactive spirit in small things reflects the same diligence required when facing the larger challenges of religious legislation and the closing work of the gospel (4T 410.2) (GW92 165.2).
