Ellen White's writings make it clear that we are not saved by our works. Here are key points from her books:
- "Our good works alone will not save any of us, but we cannot be saved without good works. And after we have done all that we can do, in the name and strength of Jesus we are to say: 'We are unprofitable servants.'" (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 228.2)
- "We shall none of us be saved for our own merits; the rewards of eternity are purchased by Christ, and in no case merited by man..." (Gospel Workers, 1892, p. 450.3)
- "It will avail nothing for us to do penance or to flatter ourselves that by our own works we shall merit or purchase an inheritance among the saints... Repentance is turning from self to Christ; and when we receive Christ so that through faith He can live His life in us, good works will be manifest." (Mount of Blessing, p. 87.3)
- "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us." (Titus 3:5, quoted in Ministry of Healing, p. 65.2 and Desire of Ages, p. 317.1)
- "Man is to be saved by faith, not by works; yet his faith must be shown by his works." (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 279.1)
- "Our own merit will never commend us to the favor of God; it is the worthiness of Jesus that will save us, His blood that will cleanse us; yet we have a work to do in complying with the conditions of acceptance." (Steps to Christ, p. 95.3)
In summary: We are saved by faith in Christ and His merits, not by our own works. However, genuine faith will always be accompanied by good works as evidence of that faith. Good works are the result, not the cause, of salvation.
