Isaiah 48:9
"For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off."
"The inhabitants of Judah were all undeserving, yet God would not give them up. By them His name was to be exalted among the heathen. Many who were wholly unacquainted with His attributes were yet to behold the glory of the divine character. It was for the purpose of making plain His merciful designs that He kept sending His servants the prophets with the message, “Turn ye again now everyone from his evil way.” Jeremiah 25:5 . “For My name's sake,” He declared through Isaiah, “will I defer Mine anger, and for My praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.” “For Mine own sake, even for Mine own sake, will I do it: for how should My name be polluted? and I will not give My glory unto another.” Isaiah 48:9, 11 . Isaiah 48:10
"Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction."
"We were disappointed, but not disheartened. We resolved to refrain from murmuring at the trying ordeal by which the Lord was purging us from the dross and refining us like gold in the furnace; to submit patiently to the process of purifying that God deemed needful for us; and to wait with patient hope for the Saviour to redeem His tried and faithful ones. LS 61.3"
Both passages use the metaphor of refining in a furnace to describe a process of purification through trials. The Isaiah verse provides a clear biblical basis for EGW's statement.
God has always tried His people in the furnace of affliction. It is in the heat of the furnace that the dross is separated from the true gold of the Christian character. Jesus watches the test; He knows what is needed to purify the precious metal, that it may reflect the radiance of His love. It is by close, testing trials that God disciplines His servants. He sees that some have powers which may be used in the advancement of His work, and He puts these persons upon trial; in His providence He brings them into positions that test their character and reveal defects and weaknesses that have been hidden from their own knowledge. He gives them opportunity to correct these defects and to fit themselves for His service. He shows them their own weakness, and teaches them to lean upon Him; for He is their only help and safeguard. EGW directly references the concept of being refined in the furnace of affliction, mirroring Isaiah 48:10. The language and imagery are very similar.

The EGW passage directly alludes to the refining process and the furnace of affliction, mirroring the imagery and concept in Isaiah 48:10. The mention of 'dross' further strengthens the connection.
Brother F, God had provided you with a laborer of deep experience, the ablest in the field. He was one who had been acquainted in his own experience with the wiles of Satan, and who had passed through most intense mental anguish. He had been permitted in the all-wise providence of God to feel the heat of the refining furnace and had there learned that every refuge but God would fail and every prop upon which he could lean for support would prove but a broken reed. Isaiah 48:18
"O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:"
