Leviticus 20:6
"And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people."
"The Hebrews were expressly forbidden to engage in any manner in pretended communion with the dead. God closed this door effectually when He said: “The dead know not anything.... Neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6 . “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” Psalm 146:4 . Leviticus 20:26
"And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine."
"were not to serve their own desires, or to imitate the idolatrous nations around them, but to remain a distinct, separate people, that all who looked upon them might say: These are they whom God brought out of the land of Egypt, who keep the law of Ten Commandments. An Israelite was known to be such as soon as seen, for God through simple means distinguished him as His. 1T 524.1"
Both passages highlight the separation of Israel from other nations and their belonging to God. The phrase 'severed you from other people, that ye should be mine' in Leviticus directly supports EGW's point about remaining a 'distinct, separate people'.
"world is plainly and positively enjoined in both the Old and the New Testament. There is a wall of separation which the Lord Himself has established between the things of the world and the things He has chosen out of the world and sanctified unto Himself. The calling and character of God's people are peculiar, their prospects are peculiar, and these peculiarities distinguish them from all other people. All of God's people upon the earth are one body, from the beginning to the end of time. They have one Head that directs and governs the body. The same injunctions that rested upon ancient Israel, rest upon God's people now, to be separate from the world. The great Head of the church has not changed. The experience of Christians in these days is much like the travels of ancient Israel. Please read 1 Corinthians 10 , especially from the 6th to the 15th verse : 1T 283.4"
Both passages emphasize the separation of God's people from the world and their distinct identity. EGW's statement about a 'wall of separation' echoes the idea of being 'severed' from other people.
Leviticus 20:27
"A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them."
"It was told the king that a woman who had a familiar spirit was living in concealment at Endor. This woman had entered into covenant with Satan to yield herself to his control, to fulfill his purposes; and in return, the prince of evil wrought wonders for her and revealed secret things to her. PP 676.2"
The EGW passage describes the woman at Endor as having a familiar spirit, which is directly related to the prohibition and punishment described in Leviticus 20:27. The passage illustrates the principle of avoiding necromancy.
