State of the dead
# The State of the Dead According to Ellen White Ellen White taught clearly that the dead are in a state of unconsciousness, which she described as sleep. Paul's instruction to the Thessalonians forms the foundation of her teaching: "We would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope" (TT 137). She emphasized that this sleep continues until the resurrection at Christ's second coming, when "the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first" (TT 137). This understanding stands in direct contrast to spiritualistic deceptions. Ellen White warned that "in the near future many will be confronted by the spirits of devils personating beloved relatives or friends, and declaring the most dangerous heresies" (4SP 377.1). She stressed the critical importance of understanding this truth: "We must be prepared to withstand them with the Bible truth that the dead know not anything, and that they who thus appear are the spirits of devils" (4SP 377.1). The resurrection itself will be a glorious awakening. Drawing from Isaiah's prophecy, she wrote: "Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead" (LS 461.1). She described this moment when the voice of the Son of God is heard calling forth the sleeping saintsand they come "from the prison house of death" (PK 728.1). Ellen White also addressed the comfort this truth brings to believers. The Thessalonians had been troubled about their deceased loved ones, having "buried them from their sight with fear and trembling" (LP 112.1). But the truth of the resurrection provided "cheering hope... that the righteous dead would rise from their graves to a holy, happy immortal life" (LP 112.1), in marked contrast to pagan beliefs that offered no hope of reunion. She warned that Satan would use false manifestations to deceive: "It is not difficult for the evil angels to represent both saints and sinners who have died, and make these representations visible to human eyes" (LDE 161). She prophesied that "these manifestations will be more frequent, and developments of a more startling character will appear as we near the close of time" (LDE 161). --- 💡 **You might also want to explore:** • What did Ellen White say about the nature of man and the soul? • How does understanding the state of the dead protect us from spiritualism? • What will happen at the resurrection of the righteous? --- 📚 **thousands of passages found** containing these search terms — [Explore in Full-Text Search](/advanced-search?q=State+of+the+dead)
