Ellen White recorded Martin Luther's powerful response when threatened with death. When a stranger approached him with a pistol hidden under his cloak and asked why he walked alone, Luther answered: "I am in God's hands. He is my strength and my shield. What can man do unto me?" (
GC 140.1). Upon hearing these words, the stranger turned pale and fled "as from the presence of the angels of heaven" (
GC 140.1). This incident reveals Luther's unwavering trust in divine protection. Ellen White noted that "Rome became more and more exasperated by the attacks of Luther, and it was declared by some of his fanatical opponents, even by doctors in Catholic universities, that he who should kill the rebellious monk would be without sin" (
GC 140.1).
Despite this climate of danger, Luther refused to be intimidated. When friends urged him not to go to Worms, fearing for his safety even with a safe-conduct, Luther's response demonstrated his complete dependence on God: "The papists do not desire my coming to Worms, but my condemnation and my death. It matters not. Pray not for me, but for the word of God.... Christ will give me His Spirit to overcome these ministers of error. I despise them during my life; I shall triumph over them by my death" (
GC 150.5). Ellen White also recorded another instance where Luther explained his fearless approach: "I am going to Wittenberg under a protection far higher than that of princes and electors. I think not of soliciting your highness's support, and far from desiring your protection, I would rather protect you myself. ... There is no sword that can further this cause. God alone must do everything" (
HF 119.3). He added, "I am ready to incur the displeasure of your highness and the anger of the whole world. Are not the Wittenbergers my sheep? And ought I not, if necessary, to expose myself to death for their sakes?" (
HF 119.3).
Ellen White emphasized that Luther's confidence was well-placed: "God had a work for him to do, and angels of Heaven were sent to protect him" (
GC88 132.2). --- 💡 **You might also want to explore:**
