Ellen White’s writings provide clear guidance on how we should relate to Catholics:
- We are to share the truth, but not in a spirit of condemnation or hostility. “We should not go out of our way to make hard thrusts at the Catholics. Among the Catholics there are many who are most conscientious Christians and who walk in all the light that shines upon them, and God will work in their behalf... Do not censure others; do not condemn them.” (
9T 243.3;
GW 328.4)
- When entering a new place, we should avoid creating prejudice or acting as enemies. “On entering a new place to labor, we should be careful not to create prejudice in the minds of the Catholics, or do anything to lead them to think us their enemies. The Lord has shown to me that there are many among them who will be saved.” (GW92 299.2)
- We should seek common ground and be friendly. “If our ministers show themselves friendly and sociable... it will have an excellent effect, and may give these pastors and their congregations favorable impressions of the truth... we should dwell mostly upon topics in which all feel an interest, and which will not lead directly and pointedly to the subjects of disagreement.” (GW92 299.1)
- Show love and respect for all, as Christ did. “To bring them to Christ, you must show your love and respect for them as the purchase of His blood.” (
6T 348.1)
- Pray for and with ministers of other denominations, including Catholics. “Our ministers should seek to come near to the ministers of other denominations. Pray for and with these men, for whom Christ is interceding.” (
6T 78.1)
- Be aware of doctrinal differences, but do not let this lead to bigotry or unkindness. “It should ever be manifest that we are reformers, but not bigots.” (GW92 299.1)
- Work for the salvation of all, showing kindness and sympathy. “All who profess to be children of God should bear in mind that as missionaries they will be brought into contact with all classes of minds... all need kindness and sympathy.” (
MH 495.3)
In summary: We should relate to Catholics with respect, kindness, and a spirit of Christian love, seeking to share truth without condemnation, and always remembering that God has sincere followers among them.
