# Where is the Ark of the Covenant?
Ellen White addressed the location of the earthly ark of the covenant with remarkable clarity:
> **"Among the righteous still in Jerusalem, to whom had been made plain the divine purpose, were some who determined to place beyond the reach of ruthless hands the sacred ark containing the tables of stone on which had been traced the precepts of the Decalogue. This they did. With mourning and sadness they secreted the ark in a cave, where it was to be hidden from the people of Israel and Judah because of their sins, and was to be no more restored to them. That sacred ark is yet hidden. It has never been disturbed since it was secreted."** (
PK 453.2)
This statement reveals that the earthly ark was hidden by faithful individuals in Jerusalem before the Babylonian captivity. Ellen White emphasized that this concealment was permanent—the ark would never be restored to Israel and remains hidden to this day.
## The Heavenly Ark
However, Ellen White also taught about a heavenly ark that exists in God's sanctuary above:
> **"The ark in the tabernacle on earth contained the two tables of stone, upon which were inscribed the law of God. When the temple of God was opened in heaven, the ark of His testament was seen. Within the holy of holies in heaven, the divine law is enshrined—the law that was spoken by God and written with His finger on the tables of stone."** (
HF 268.2)
She explained that in 1844, when Christ entered the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, believers by faith could behold this heavenly ark containing God's eternal law.
## The Ark's Purpose and Contents
Ellen White described what the earthly ark contained and represented:
> **"In the most holy place stood the ark, a chest overlaid with gold, the depository of the Ten Commandments. Above the ark was the mercy seat surmounted by two cherubim wrought of solid gold. In this apartment the divine presence was manifested in the cloud of glory between the cherubim."** (
HF 253.3)
In summary, the earthly ark of the covenant remains hidden in a cave where it was secreted before Jerusalem's destruction, never to be recovered. Meanwhile, the true ark exists in heaven's sanctuary, containing God's eternal law and serving as the focal point of Christ's final ministry.
