Ellen White directly references Daniel 8:14 in this passage.
"God tested and proved His people by the passing of the time in 1843. The mistake made in reckoning the prophetic periods was not at once discovered even by learned men who opposed the views of those who were looking for Christ's coming. Scholars declared that Mr. Miller was right in his calculation of the time, though they disputed him in regard to the event that would crown that period. But they, and the waiting people of God, were in a common error on the question of time. 1T 52.4"
"And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no."
Both passages describe a time of testing and proving by God. Deuteronomy 8:2 refers to the Israelites' wilderness experience, while the EGW passage refers to the Millerite movement and the disappointment of 1844. The parallel lies in the idea of God using a challenging experience to reveal the hearts of His people.
