Ellen White’s writings strongly affirm the value and necessity of women as Christian workers, teachers, missionaries, and spiritual leaders—especially in roles such as teaching, visiting families, praying, and evangelizing. She writes, "Women can be instruments of righteousness, rendering holy service to God. It was Mary who first preached a risen Saviour." (Gospel Workers 1892, p. 383)
She also highlights that women can do a work in families and among other women that men cannot do, and that their labor is needed: "They can do in families a work that men cannot do, a work that reaches the inner life. They can come close to the hearts of those whom men cannot reach. Their labor is needed." (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 117)
Ellen White notes that the wife of a minister, or a sister-laborer, can do almost an equal amount of good as the minister himself, especially among women and children (Gospel Workers, p. 201).
However, she does not explicitly state that women should be ordained as pastors or hold the official office of pastor. In fact, she says, "I do not recommend that woman should become a voter or an office-holder; but as a missionary... she may do very much." (Gospel Workers 1892, p. 383) She does recognize that women may be called to ministry work "in the line of ministry," even if "the hands of ordination have not been laid upon her." (Gospel Workers, p. 452)
The specific role of "pastor" in her writings is generally referred to in the masculine, and she emphasizes the need for faithful, consecrated men as pastors (Gospel Workers, p. 185; Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 260).
In summary: Ellen White powerfully supports women in ministry, evangelism, teaching, and spiritual leadership, but does not explicitly endorse women serving as ordained pastors or holding the official office of pastor. She does, however, affirm that women can do a work equal in value and impact to that of a minister, especially in areas where they are uniquely suited.
