Ellen White described Satan's appearance in two distinct ways: his **true form** as a fallen angel, and his **deceptive appearances** when he seeks to mislead humanity. ## Satan's True Appearance In vision, Ellen White was shown Satan as he actually is. She wrote that "he still bears a kingly form. His features are still noble, for he is an angel fallen. But the expression of his countenance is full of anxiety, care, unhappiness, malice, hate, mischief, deceit, and every evil" (
1SG 27.2). She particularly noticed his brow, noting that his forehead commenced from his eyes to recede backward— a physical manifestation of his moral degradation (
1SP 48.4). She described his frame as large, "but the flesh hung loosely about his hands and face" (
1SG 27.2).
Most striking was his expression: "His eyes were cunning and sly, and showed great penetration" (
1SP 48.4). She observed him with his chin resting upon his left handas if in deep thought, wearing a smile so full of evil and Satanic slyness— the very smile "he wears just before he makes sure of his victim" (
1SG 27.2). ## His Deceptive Appearances However, Satan rarely reveals his true form to humanity. Instead, "he will frequently appear as an angel of light, arrayed in the livery of Heaven; he will assume friendly airs, manifesting great sanctity of character" (
T24 177.2). Ellen White warned that "he covers his hideous purposes, and succeeds too well in deluding the unwary" (
Con 87.1).
She explained that Satan "does not always wear the ferocious look of the lion, but when he can work to better effect he transforms himself into an angel of light" (
2T 286.3). When he tempted Christ, he looked like an angel of lightand "claimed to be a messenger from Heaven" (
SJ 45.4). Even when he entered Eden, he took the form of a beautiful creature, with wingswhose "appearance was bright, resembling burnished gold" (
1SP 35.1).
Most sobering is her warning about the end times: In the last days he will appear in such a manner as to make men believe him to be Christ come the second time into the world. He will indeed transform himself into an angel of lightand "will bear the appearance of Christ in every particular, so far as mere appearance goes" (
LDE 163). The key principle is that Satan's outward appearance is almost always a deception designed to hide his true character and intentions. --- 💡 **You might also want to explore:**
