Ellen White's writings emphasize the solemn and sacred nature of pastoral ministry, highlighting the minister's role as God's mouthpiece and shepherd of the flock. Pastors have a vital role, and Ellen White notes that "the gospel minister is engaged in a very solemn, sacred work" (PaM 13). This calling requires diligence and a close connection with Heaven, enabling the pastor to be "an able expositor of the word, capable of adapting his teachings to the wants of the people" (GW92 70). They are to be living channels of light, representing the Lord in thought, word, and deed, as "the minister stands as God's mouthpiece to the people, and in thought, in word, in act, he is to represent his Lord" (PaM 13). Ministry involves more than just preaching; it requires "earnest, personal labor" (AA 526.1). Pastors are called to be "faithful shepherds" (AA 526.1), feeding God's people with the bread of life and exercising a watchful diligence over the flock, not in a dictatorial manner, but in a way that encourages, strengthens, and uplifts. This includes visiting the sick, catechizing the children, admonishing the erring, and laboring to settle disputes and promote harmony and brotherly love, as demonstrated by those who "fed the flock of God, leading them to the green pastures and living fountains of His holy word" (GC 68.1). Furthermore, pastors should focus on pastoral evangelism, teaching others how to be saved and helping them understand the importance of truth. Ellen White writes, "Let everyone who has eaten of the bread which came down from heaven labor in all simplicity to teach others what they must do to be saved" (6MR 62). In essence, pastoral ministry is a sacred calling that demands diligence, personal involvement, and a deep connection with God, all for the purpose of nurturing and guiding the flock of God toward salvation and spiritual growth.
