Ellen White's writings emphasize the importance of preparing for the trials ahead, particularly in light of the last days. She highlights that the hardships we face can serve as preparation for the "time of trouble."
She notes that we are living in a period filled with perils and that important and fearful events are before us. She wrote, "We are amid the perils of the last days" (
1TT 333.1). She also stated, "We should be preparing for these things; for they will come. Those who share in Christ's glory must share in His sufferings" (AUCR
April 15, 1903, par. 21). This suggests that enduring hardships and afflictions is a necessary part of the Christian experience, especially as we approach the end times.
Ellen White also warns against being caught up in earthly concerns, which can hinder our preparation. She explained, "Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life, and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief" (
4SP 443.2). Instead, she encourages us to stay our faith upon God, recognizing that the prophecies of wars, famines, and natural disasters have a direct application to the last days: "We need to stay our faith upon God; for there is just before us a time that will try men's souls" (
T33 281.1).
Therefore, we should not sit in calm expectation but engage in earnest work with unwavering faith, preparing to stand against opposition. {{UNVERIFIED_START}}"God has revealed what is to take place in the last days, that his people may be prepared to stand against the tempests of opposition and wrath" (SW December 25, 1906, par. 10){{UNVERIFIED_END}} {{WARNING}}Reference could not be verified{{WARNING_END}}.
