"For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."
Both passages describe people turning away from established religious practices that are seen as inadequate. Jeremiah 2:13 speaks of forsaking the 'fountain of living waters' for broken cisterns, while the EGW passage speaks of people turning away from 'worthless husks of superstitious rites and human traditions.'
"Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."
Both passages describe people turning away from established religious authorities to embrace a new source of spiritual nourishment. The EGW quote describes people leaving the Romish clergy for the new teachings, while John 6:68 depicts Peter's declaration that Jesus has the words of eternal life, implying a rejection of other sources.
"When persecution was kindled against the teachers of the truth, they gave heed to the words of Christ: “When they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another.” Matthew 10:23 . The light penetrated everywhere. The fugitives would find somewhere a hospitable door opened to them, and there abiding, they would preach Christ, sometimes in the church, or, if denied that privilege, in private houses or in the open air. Ellen White directly references Matthew 10:23 in this passage.
"In vain both ecclesiastical and civil authorities were invoked to crush the heresy. In vain they resorted to imprisonment, torture, fire, and sword. Thousands of believers sealed their faith with their blood, and yet the work went on. Persecution served only to extend the truth, and the fanaticism which Satan endeavored to unite with it resulted in making more clear the contrast between the work of Satan and the work of God. GC 196.3"
"Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word."
The EGW passage describes persecution leading to the spread of truth, mirroring the effect of the scattering of believers in Acts 8:4.
