Warned Wars Rumors

The concept of being warned about wars and rumors of wars is a central theme in the prophetic discourse regarding the end of time. These events are identified as specific signs that the time of trouble is near at hand and that the world is increasingly stirred by a spirit of conflict (PH120 11.2). Such developments are not merely random historical occurrences but are part of a sequence of "sorrows" that signal the approach of the end of all things (SW December 25, 1906, par. 6). In analyzing the historical application of these warnings, it is noted that Christ’s predictions regarding wars and rumors of wars had a specific relevance to the period preceding the destruction of Jerusalem (DA 628.3).

During that time, political instability and the murder of emperors served as a precursor to the end of the Jewish nation (HLv 422.2). However, these same prophecies are described as having a more direct and significant application to the final days of earth's history (HM November 1, 1893, par. 12). The warnings regarding these coming troubles are intended to prepare the people of God for a period of trial that will be unprecedented in human history (GW 326.2).

Because these events indicate that the close of human probation is near, there is a specific counsel to avoid unnecessary conflict or the publication of material that would prematurely incite the passions of enemies (16MR 157.2). The recognition of these signs—including wars, famines, and natural disasters—is meant to lead to a deeper reliance on God rather than a focus on self-preservation (DA 628.3).
