"Teaching Health Principles Gospel workers should be able also to give instruction in the principles of healthful living. There is sickness everywhere, and most of it might be prevented by attention to the laws of health. The people need to see the bearing of health principles upon their well-being, both for this life and for the life to come. They need to be awakened to their responsibility for the human habitation fitted up by their Creator as His dwelling place, and over which He desires them to be faithful stewards. They need to be impressed with the truth conveyed in the words of Holy Writ: MH 146"
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"
The EGW passage directly quotes and elaborates on the principle found in 1 Corinthians 6:19, emphasizing the body as a temple and stewardship.
"“Ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” 2 Corinthians 6:16 . MH 146.2"
"And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
Ellen White directly references 2 Corinthians 6:16 in this passage.
"Thousands need and would gladly receive instruction concerning the simple methods of treating the sick— methods that are taking the place of the use of poisonous drugs. There is great need of instruction in regard to dietetic reform. Wrong habits of eating and the use of unhealthful food are in no small degree responsible for the intemperance and crime and wretchedness that curse the world. MH 146.3"
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"
Both passages connect the body to a spiritual purpose and imply a responsibility to care for it. While EGW focuses on diet and health habits, the underlying principle of respecting the body as a vessel is shared.
"In teaching health principles, keep before the mind the great object of reform—that its purpose is to secure the highest development of body and mind and soul. Show that the laws of nature, being the laws of God, are designed for our good; that obedience to them promotes happiness in this life, and aids in the preparation for the life to come. MH 146.4"
"And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day."
Both passages highlight that obedience to God's laws (whether explicitly stated or natural laws) is for our own good and preservation.
"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."
Both passages discuss the benefits of physical well-being in relation to spiritual life and the life to come. While 1 Timothy 4:8 contrasts bodily exercise with godliness, EGW integrates health principles into the preparation for eternal life.
