"Disguise it as they may, the real cause of doubt and skepticism, in most cases, is the love of sin. The teachings and restrictions of God's word are not welcome to the proud, sin-loving heart, and those who are unwilling to obey its requirements are ready to doubt its authority. In order to arrive at truth, we must have a sincere desire to know the truth and a willingness of heart to obey it. And all who come in this spirit to the study of the Bible will find abundant evidence that it is God's word, and they may gain an understanding of its truths that will make them wise unto salvation. "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."
Both passages address the idea that a love of sin hinders one's ability to accept truth. John 3:19 states that people love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil, while EGW states that the love of sin causes doubt and skepticism.
"And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."
Both passages connect scripture with wisdom and salvation. 2 Timothy 3:15 states that the scriptures are able to make one wise unto salvation, and EGW states that studying the Bible in the right spirit will lead to an understanding of its truths that will make one wise unto salvation.
