Insights from Ellen G. White's Writings
Focusing excessively on the power of the adversary can have a detrimental effect on the spiritual life. When believers dwell on the workings of the enemy, the apostasy around them, or their own discouraging experiences, they often lose sight of God's matchless love and omnipotence (2TT 338). This preoccupation actually pleases the enemy, as it causes him to appear larger in the imagination than he truly is (DA 493.1). By constantly talking about the strength of the tempter, individuals may inadvertently allow him to fasten his power more firmly upon them (MYP 105.1).
The most effective defense against spiritual weakness is to shift the focus toward the character and might of Christ. While it is true that humans have no inherent power to rescue themselves from the grasp of the enemy, God has provided a way of escape through His Son (CCh 79.3). Instead of magnifying the adversary, believers are encouraged to talk of Jesus and magnify His love (MH 94.4). When the mind is occupied with the power of the "Mighty One," the enemy is driven back, and as the soul draws near to God, He draws near to the soul (MYP 105.1).
Victory is assured for those who walk in humility and rely on the merits of the Savior. Although the enemy may try to mar the peace of the godly, his power is strictly limited. He cannot control the human will or force a person to sin without their own consent (GrH_c 6.4). By taking hold of Christ's strength and exercising the "shield of faith," the most earnest efforts of the foe can be baffled (T32 50.2). Ultimately, the presence of the Holy Spirit serves as an omnipotent defense, ensuring that no one who claims Christ's protection in faith will be left under the enemy's power (MH 94.4).
