Overcoming temptation is possible through the strength of Jesus. Even if one has been overcome in the past, it does not have to always be that way. "Jesus is your helper. In his strength you can overcome the beguiling power of appetite. Summon will-power to your aid" (
CTBH 147.2).
It is crucial to resist evil promptings and cry out to Jesus for help. When assailed by temptation, "steadfastly resist the evil promptings; say to your soul, 'How can I dishonor my Redeemer? I have given myself to Christ; I cannot do the works of Satan.' Cry to the dear Saviour for help to sacrifice every idol and to put away every darling sin" (SL 90).
Temptations to indulge appetite can be overcome "only by the help that God can impart. But with every temptation we have the promise of God that there shall be a way of escape" (
CTBH 22.2). Through faith and prayer, all can meet the requirements of the gospel. "No man can be forced to transgress. His own consent must be first gained; the soul must purpose the sinful act before passion can dominate over reason or iniquity triumph over conscience. Temptation, however strong, is never an excuse for sin" (
5T 177.2).
We must be constantly on guard, as "dangers beset every path" (
MH 509.4). It is important not to needlessly expose oneself to temptation by placing oneself "upon the enemy's ground" (GW92 371). Self-knowledge, understanding one's own character and the sin that most easily besets them, can save many from falling into grievous temptations.
Our thoughts must be centered upon God, and we must "put forth earnest effort to overcome the evil tendencies of the natural heart" (
MH 455.2). "Only by overcoming as Christ overcame shall we win the crown of life" (
MH 455.2). We are told to "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you" (
SJ 48.5, quoting James 4:7, 8). When temptations and trials rush in, we should go to God in prayer, and He will provide grace and strength to overcome (
2SG 290.1).
